A Plant Workshop in Your Backyard- Medicine Bow comes to your doorstep. Ask your neighbors to join you in the discovery of the Indians’ secrets about food, craft and medicines. There is no better way to learn plants than to know the plants you see every day near your home. Call or write for appointment.

Pre-registration is required for all events.

August 21 – KNIFE & HAWK – Learn to throw knife and tomahawk.         $75

August 22 – ARCHERY RENDEZVOUS – (see Sept 12)                          $10

Sept. 11 – THE ART OF ARCHERY –Learn the best blend of Native American, Old English, and modern styles. For ages 7 to 107 and all skill levels. Adopt the unique melding of strength and grace that has been known to the best of archers of history. Taught by 1999 World Longbow Champion. Nine archers are accepted. Archery gear provided or BYO. $75

Sept. 12 – ARCHERY RENDEZVOUS – An afternoon of fun and adventure with bow and arrow for all skill levels (handicap system) to win the SILVER ARROW. An excellent family opportunity. $10/person ( bow/arrow rental add $10 )

OCT. 30-31 – THE WILD PLANTS OF AUTUMN– Learn to identify and use the wild herbs, shrubs, trees, fruits, nuts , roots, bark and vines of the season as the Cherokees did for food, medicines, and craft materials. $95 ($105 with signs class below)

OCT. 30 – PLAINS INDIAN SIGN LANGUAGE – An evening class in Medicine Bow Lodge to learn the silent skill of speaking with your hands, as developed by the migratory tribes of the plains. Bring your best friend. $20/pers

NOV. 5, 6, 7 – HEMLOCKFEST ! – A benefit festival at Starbridge (just outside Dahlonega) to raise money for the preservation of our dying hemlock trees. Music, food, archery, knife throwing, education programs, and more. For information and directions visit: www.lumpkincoalition.org

NOV. 28 – ARCHERY RENDEZVOUS – ( see Sept. 12) $10

DEC. 11-12 – STALKING & TRACKING – The ancient discipline for approaching wild animals undetected. Learn the prints, gaits, and track patterns of the animals of Appalachia and how to track them. $95

DEC. 14 – KNIFE/TOMAHAWK – Learn to throw. Great fun. $65

DEC. 21 – THE RED SHIRT DINNER – A solstice dinner gathering in Medicine Bow Lodge to honor all wearers of the Red Shirt. Must RSVP by Dec. 1.

JAN. 8-9 WILDERNESS SURVIVAL SKILLS (Part I) Learn the secrets of the Indians to increase your self-reliance by utilizing what the forest provides, enhancing your practical integration with nature. Though not designed as an ordeal, this course teaches and tests your efficiency at self-made winter shelter, producing potable water and creating fire without a match. $125

JAN. 15 – THE ART OF ARCHERY (see Sept. 11) $75

FEB. 12-13 – WILDERNESS SURVIVAL SKILLS (Part II ) This conclusion of the previous survival class includes the skills of food gathering, cooking, emergency medicines, building traps and snares. $125

FEB. 20 – ARCHERY RENDEZVOUS – ( see Sept. 12 ) $10

FEB. 26-27 – THE PLANTS OF WINTER & ALL THINGS FIRE ! – Learn to identify plants without their leaves using the intricate clues of WINTER BOTANY. Plus an in-depth class on fire: wood selection, pyre building and three methods of fire by friction. $100

MAR. 26 – A HISTORY OF THE NATIVE AMERICANS – An evening program in Medicine Bow Lodge that traces the arc of the 500 tribes, from the first footstep on the continent to the Indian Removal and the Trail of Tears. Includes how land shaped the different tribes and their languages; philosophies; lifestyles; rituals; hunting techniques; and tools. See a host of handmade crafts and artifacts. Hands-on demonstrations. Perfect for school research. $30

POLICY

Overnight classes use Medicine Bow’s campground where you’ll make lasting friendships around the campfire. If you’re not up for camping, local accommodations are available in Dahlonega. Students bring their own camping gear and food unless otherwise stated. Each class is filled to its limit (usually 13 ) by a first-come-first-served receipt of check made payable to MEDICINE BOW, LTD.
